The youngest has started rowing on Rudyard Lake. He’s training in part under the instruction of the dad of team GB Olympic gold medallist Anna Watkins. Now, I’m not saying my youngest is an Olympian or is going to be an Olympian, but I am saying what a phenomenal opportunity it is for him and other local kids to learn from someone who knows how to train. I assumed Richard (Anna’s dad) had always been a rower and had been her inspiration, but apparently she was at university in Cambridge when a random stranger stopped her on the street to say, “You look like you’d be a great rower. Please come down to our club if you fancy joining the team.” So she went down to the club and joined up! Then as her rowing career took off, she inspired her dad to learn rowing too, so he now coaches at our local rowing club. It’s given me chance to talk to my boy about grabbing opportunities when they come our way and I couldn’t be prouder of him for pushing himself.
