If you pack one piece of nightwear for a holiday, then make sure it’s a lightweight dressing gown. If you’re elegant then it could be used whilst sitting about chatting (G&T in hand) while you’re getting ready for an evening out –  just wanting something beautiful to wear in that idyllic moment. For me, catastrophising all of the worse case scenarios, it’s the fear of a hotel fire alarm going off in the middle of the night – just needing to grab it and go. I think maybe it’s because grandmother let me watch The Towering Inferno when I was about 8. It’s always stayed with me. You don’t want to meet Richard Chamberlain greedily bagsying the lift when you’re trying to escape, do you? And anyway, everyone knows you’re supposed to take the stairs, but as you make your escape (however it’s done) at least you look fabulous in case you manage to fall in love with Steve McQueen on the way out.
