One of the managers from the pre-Covid gym I used to go to rang my mobile phone out of the blue. I usually ignore unknown numbers because it’s easier than saying, “No thanks,” to the myriad of people who try to scam me or sell me stuff every day, but I answered it because I could see it was a local and I wondered if it was the doctors, the schools or the pharmacy. You know, like you do.

“Hi Debs, it’s Dan from Fit Bodies gym.”

“Hi Dan, lovely to hear from you. I got leukaemia during Covid and I’m OK. The doctors think I should live a normal lifespan, but I need to go for blood tests every few months and take some tablets every day. But I just think I’m really lucky rather than unfortunate. How amazing that 20 years ago I’d have died, but now I can crack on,” I answered without pausing for breath. In my head I was thinking, “What a brilliantly convenient excuse to have not been back to his gym for 4 years. He won’t think I’m rubbish now because this totally justifies my appalling gym record.”

I assumed he was phoning to try and get me re-enrolled.

“Deb, that’s great news that you’re OK. We wanted to talk to you about maybe collaborating on some clothing with our brand and your brand.”

You know when you momentarily actually want to be someone entirely different in a different life and most specifically a different town? Like the awful realisation that he hadn’t actually phoned me for a dramatic medical history of an excuse as to why I hadn’t been dying on his cross trainer for 4 years. He just wants some t-shirts and hoodies with our label and his logo. FFS.

“Oh that would be fabulous!” I heard myself reply.

Anyway he’s popping in to see us. I’m just going to smile my way through this. I’m going to tell him about my fabulous rowing machine at home and how well I’m doing with it. He’s going to sign me up for the gym again, isn’t he?

There’s 20% OFF our full-priced collection with the code SPRING25.
