Flog It
My siblings and I have been staying at my parents house on and off for a few weeks. Mum and Dad have been recovering from a combination of hip surgery and falling over. I take my disabled teenager to sit on the sofa with my 90-year-old father so they can have a good natter and keep out of trouble while I hoover or change sheets or cook. Flog It is usually on at many millions of decibels in the very much not background.
Sometimes when Flog It has finished I overhear their conversations. It’s usually my teenager cleverly asking questions about church so that my delighted retired vicar dad thinks she’s a new convert. She’s not. She’s worked out that this topic gets her full attention, and suddenly his usual hard of hearing is less hard and more hearing. No matter. They’re both behaving and not falling over and not getting under my feet or my mother’s new hip.
I love my iPhone. I realise this incredible tool is my connection to an outside world. In years gone by I know there would have been isolation with the experience of being a carer for lots of people all at once. Now, at a glance I have connection with so many communities experiencing the same. I have my family, my work and you good people as a distraction, and you’re all inside my phone. It’s the most incredible thing and the enhancement it brings to life is an absolute joy!
