It Takes a Village
I went into M&S at Handforth with our Martha. I had to pop to the loos. Martha’s clearly got learning disability (she has Williams Syndrome). The fact she was wearing massive ear defenders is probably a big giveaway, but she’s small and doesn’t look 18 – even though she is. She’s also very anxious, but she waited outside for me and when I came out there was a young girl – maybe 14(?) with a proper Mancunian accent and brown hair. She didn’t know if Martha was lost or not. The girl had waited and chatted with Martha until I came out, and she explained that she didn’t want to leave her until she knew she’d be safe.
Now you have a choice, don’t you? You can either be offended that someone might think that you’d left your daughter in an unsafe situation, or, as I chose to do, you can be massively grateful that someone spotted somebody vulnerable and made themselves vulnerable (to my potential offence) by standing by to check she was OK.
I loved that teenage girl for waiting with my Martha. What an absolute superstar she is. It takes a village to raise a person, and today that girl was my neighbour.
The Winter Sale’s on and we’re changing prices all the time so if there’s, for example, just a handful left of anything, now’s the time to pick up an absolute bargain.
Love to all!
